The Kentucky Medical Association (KMA) met for its annual meeting on September 9-12, 2012, in Louisville, KY.  One of the goals of the KMA is to advocate for policy change to improve the health of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  To forward this goal, the KMA House of Delegates passed a resolution by unanimous vote to seek a regulation or legislation that would require immunization with HPV vaccine, as recommended by the CDC Committee on Immunization Practices for boys and girls of school age.

The Affordable Care Act requires non-grandfathered health plans beginning on or after August 1, 2012 to cover preventive services for women, without cost sharing, such as co-payments. The Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation estimates that the new law will enable 650,424 Kentucky women to access additional preventive services, including well-woman visits, gestational diabetes screening, HPV DNA testing, STI counseling, HIV screening and counseling, contraception and contraceptive counseling, breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling, and interpersonal and domestic violence screening and counseling.

Contingent upon funding, the Cervical Cancer-Free Kentucky initiative will offer Mini-Awards in the amount of $20,000 per award. Overall, we anticipate funding approximately eight (8) innovative projects to help impact cervical cancer disparities in Kentucky.
